English through Literature

Students in this course will strengthen their reading comprehension skills, and take a close look at a series of literary works in the English language. They will learn about the genres of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry and how literature reflects the world and the people it’s written for. The goal is to guide them into the often esoteric world of literary analysis and give them the tools to navigate it without fear. They will learn strategies for critically examining a text and improving their work. We will discuss poems and short stories from Edgar Allan Poe to The Little Mermaid. The course will culminate with the creation of the student’s work.
